Weather gives SFL 73-fixture backlog

The Scottish Football League last night revealed this is officially their worst-ever season for fixture chaos – with a staggering 73 matches still outstanding.

Hampden officials are bidding to combat the ever-growing backlog of games in the SFL as the winter freeze shows no sign of relenting.

All three leagues, the First, Second and Third Divisions, are scheduled to finish on Saturday 1 May ahead of the end-of-season play-offs. There are 73 rearranged games still to be played in the SFL and the situation could yet get worse if more matches fall victim to the weather this weekend.

Incredibly, a total of 113 matches have already been rearranged this season, officially the highest total on record. Eight matches were again postponed on Tuesday night, with only five beating the latest low temperatures.

SFL chief executive David Longmuir says there are no plans, at the moment, to extend the season, but their hands could be tied should, for example, Raith Rovers’ fixture list worsen. The Kirkcaldy side have six games outstanding.

Yesterday, the SFL announced nine more rearranged fixtures.
