Maroon Memories: Bauld and company make the ballot after just ten minutes at Tynecastle

Hearts 4-1 AirdrieJanuary 22, 1949

Within ten minutes Hearts had made their reservation in the second round ballot of the Scottish Cup secure. Two and a half minutes from the kick-off Dixon, fastening on to a lob from Laing, opened the scoring and fives minutes later a picture move worked by Dixon, Sloan and Wardhaugh ended with the last-mentioned practically knocking the bottom out of the contest with a second goal.

Airdrie, assisted by a strong wind and swirling ball, made occasional contact with Brown, and the Tynecastle goalkeeper was at full stretch dealing with a Picken drive. Generally speaking, however, it was just too easy for the Maroons.
