Maroon Memories: Bauld and company make the ballot after just ten minutes at Tynecastle

Within ten minutes Hearts had made their reservation in the second round ballot of the Scottish Cup secure. Two and a half minutes from the kick-off Dixon, fastening on to a lob from Laing, opened the scoring and fives minutes later a picture move worked by Dixon, Sloan and Wardhaugh ended with the last-mentioned practically knocking the bottom out of the contest with a second goal. Airdrie, assisted by a strong wind and swirling ball, made occasional contact with Brown, and the Tynecastle goalkeeper was at full stretch dealing with a Picken drive. Generally speaking, however, it was just too easy for the Maroons. Every time Bauld and company got on the move Airdrie were anxious. Their defence had no answer to the trickeries of Flavell and the directness of Dixon, Sloan and Bauld. Then, as so often happens, the struggling team got a very bad break. After about half an hour a simple tussle between Bauld and Kelly ended with the Airdrie man being carried off the field in obvious pain. So obviously did Kelly seem out for good-and-all that it was something of a surprise to find him resuming within ten minutes. The crowd greeted him warmly. His return however, made little or no difference to the run of play. Goal number three seemed on the way when Bauld connected with a low cross from Flavell. The ball struck a post with Downie beaten, travelled along the line, and was scraped clear. A minute later the Broomfield goalkeeper stopped a point-blank drive from Bauld. Within 35 seconds of the second half, the long-delayed goal number three came. Kelly completely missed the ball and the ever-ready Bauld, from 15 yards, sent an unsaveable drive screaming past Downie. There were a few furtive flickers of resistance from Airdrie, but Hearts were the masters and they knew it. However, just to to prevent Hearts from becoming too cocky, Seawright scored in the 58th minute. He got the defence in a hopeless tangle, and Brown had little chance with a sharp shot from short range. Any hopes of an Airdrie revival were extinguished when, within a minute, Wardhaugh aded the fourth. Hearts: Brown, Matheson, Mackenzie, Cox, Dougan, Laing, Sloan, Dixon, Bauld, Wardhaugh, Flavell.
