Steven Gerrard made one change to the team which defeated St Johnstone 3-0 on Wednesday, with a 19-point advantage – possibly for just a few hours – the reward at stake for a win over Jack Ross' third-placed team.
Martin Boyle gave the home side a scare in the first minute, slipping in at the back post to slam Josh Doig’s cross into the stand from close range, on a quite unpleasant afternoon, weather-wise.
But things brightened up for Rangers before half-time when Ianis Hagi steered in the opener – and game-clinching winner – past Dillon Barnes.
Both sides had penalty claims throughout the game, Leon Balogun had two shots stopped at point blank range and Allan McGregor denied Markus Hallberg before Alfredo Morelos was clean through late on but Barnes denied the Colombian as Rangers saw out the 90 minutes for three points.

2. James Tavernier - 7
Currently on a quiet spell after some jaw-dropping performances earlier this season but this was an improvement on games of late. Sharp at the back and maintained the correct tempo for the team against a handy Hibs side. Photo: Alan Harvey - SNS Group
3. Borna Barisic - 7
Left-back had his work cut out and put a shift in to contain Boyle, but dead ball striking was off today. Photo: SNS Group
4. Leon Balogun - 7
Returning defender was picked for his pace, against Boyle and Nisbet and was fine at the back, and went close to scoring himself in each half - having shots stopped on the line. Strong and showed no ill effects from head knock last week. Photo: Alan Harvey - SNS Group
