A SIX-year-old girl was airlifted from a yacht and taken to hospital after suffering from abdominal pain.

Shetland Coastguard sent a rescue helicopter to the scene around 45 miles west of Orkney when the alarm was raised just before 9pm yesterday.

The girl was flown to Kirkwall airport in Orkney along with her mother and was then transferred to Balfour Hospital in the town.

It is thought the child is American, along with the crew.

The 50 metre yacht was sailing to Orkney when the girl fell ill.
