She cited the paper’s front-page story about paedophile James Rennie – jailed for molesting a three-month-old baby – who won the right to be considered for parole after eight and a half years instead of the original 13 years.
Ms Davidson said: “Life should mean life.”
Mr Salmond said legislation soon to be brought forward would stop future cases arising where the punishment part of the sentence is reduced on appeal.
But he warned that the legislation could not apply retrospectively.
