Review: Barflies, Barony Bar, Broughton Street

Barflies ****Barony Bar, Broughton Street

IT'S not often that you get to see a piece of theatre in a pub while nursing a pint. Seize the chance while you can.

The play brings to life three stories penned by Charles Bukowski, the hard-drinking American writer, and charts the relationship history of Henry, a hard-drinking unlucky-in-love writer. Because the play is built from three stories, it doesn't offer the audience any final resolution but if you go with this, you'll have a great afternoon out.

The Barony Bar on Broughton Street provides atmospheric surroundings. The two actors are convincing and captivating. Gail Watson is charming and scary by turns as the succession of girlfriends. However, the real star of the show is Silent Dave the barman and pianist who croons his way through the soundtrack to the play. His Lilac Wine in the dimly-lit old world pub is a thing of beauty.

Run ends 31 August
