Learning skills

In response to David M Wilkie (Letters, 27 March) on the question of schools being expected to offer “Certificate courses in Learning Skills”, the answer would be a resounding no.

The whole point of a “Learn to Learn” programme is that generic skills for thinking and learning are developed to support the retention and application of knowledge across all subject areas to meet the breadth and depth of the Scottish curriculum.

Like any skill, the “Learn to Learn” skills can be taught, practised and improved. A national focus could link scientific research, which has furthered our understanding of how the brain works, with effective classroom practice for 3- to 18-year-olds to increase success, confidence and motivation in pupils.
