Football focus

James Matthews (Letters, 16 February) criticises "Scottish resentment of a distant English footballing success". Most football fans I know find constant references to England's 1966 World Cup win revealing, rather than a cause for "resentment".

Mr Matthews could better spend his time considering why England, unlike multiple World Cup winners Brazil, Italy and Germany, feel a need constantly to reinforce their assumed superiority in the world of football.

Scots should make more of the "triumphs" our sportsmen and women have achieved over the years to better inform Mr Matthews, whose attitude and typically parochial comments reinforce my view that ignorance and arrogance frequently march hand in hand.
