Andy Murray reveals mate’s secret Scots girlfriend

ANDY Murray inadvertently dropped team-mate Dominic Inglot in a spot of bother yesterday after the Scot sealed a Davis Cup match victory for Great Britain over the United States.

Murray sparked joyful celebrations at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow with his tie-clinching win over John Isner - and then the usually reticent interviewee decided to indulge in some friendly banter with his team-mates.

The rest of the GB team had joined in Murray’s post match chat with Eurosport presenter Annabel Croft, though Inglot soon had reason to regret this decision when Murray joked that the 29-year-old Londoner would likely celebrate the victory with a Glasgow girlfriend.

But it emerged that, unknown to Murray, Inglot already had a girlfriend at home who was likely to be watching the interview live on television.

Asked by Croft how they would celebrate following victory over the United States, Murray said that Inglot might spend the evening with a female friend.

“Dom’s got a little girlfriend on the go,” said Murray, laughing, before Inglot revealed he actually had a girlfriend back home. By this point Murray, who had earlier beaten John Isner to wrap up the tie, was bent double in hysterics at the awkward situation in which he had landed his friend.

Inglot later tweeted: “Just to clarify, there is no girl on the side. The joke interview was just a joke. All banter with @andy_murray”.

Murray had earlier won his match 7-6, 6-3, 7-6, finishing with an ace out wide to set up a tie against France in the summer.

He admitted Great Britain’s Davis Cup win over the United States in his native Glasgow had been a “very emotional” experience after he sealed victory with a straight-sets win over John Isner.

It was a happy homecoming for an emotional Murray, who was playing in Scotland for the first time since 2011.

Speaking after his victory, a delighted Murray praised his team, saying: “The effort and attitude of everyone in the team was excellent. I feel we deserved to win because of that. It’s a big win. It means a lot to everyone, all the staff and the players.

“I was very emotional the whole weekend. I know the team extremely well, the players and the staff.

“I was proud of them as team-mates and also as friends and my brother of the way they performed and thought in this arena and under that much pressure. All of them did incredibly well. I was proud to be part of their team,’ he added.
