Converting a derelict East Linton cottage into a holiday home offered conservation architects and interior design specialists Ron and Katrina Tremmel the chance to do something a little different.

“I wanted it to be eco-friendly and completely off grid,” says Ron. “Sustainability is the future so it made sense."

Solar panels were installed at the back of the cottage to provide electricity feeding into a battery system in the garage. A wood-burning Rayburn manages the cooking and radiator requirements and an open fire in the sitting room helps heat the ground floor.

The layout has been kept simple, with a large sitting room (with space for a pool table), open-plan kitchen and dining room and a shower room on the ground floor.

The second floor accommodates a triple bedroom and master bedroom with en suite.

Katrina chose Farrow & Ball’s Lime White for the woodwork and Tallow (a warm off-white) to contrast with the brick and oak.

“The grate came out of Gray’s of George Street, we used reclaimed kitchen doors to build in the attic storage and the kitchen came out of our old house on Ann Street. We did commission a local blacksmith to make the handrail for the staircase so technically that’s new.”
